“Fergus!” Anora’s voice rang out throughout the corridors of the family wing, rippling along the many walls of the private apartments the royals lived in. “Fergus, for the love of the Maker, come here this instant!”

Alarmed at her distress, the King barged in his wife’s chambers to find her standing near the large four-poster bed, wearing nothing but a light nightgown. Both her hands were placed on the soft round of her stomach, and as she heard him come in, she lifted her gaze, eyes open wide with panic and wonder.

“I– I felt it move. Fergus, I felt the baby moving.”

His gasped, and could do nothing but stand numbly in the doorway, still holding the knob. He should have expected this to happen – Anora was already three-month gone now, and it had only been a matter of time for the little bundle of life she carried to finally reveal itself. He couldn’t help but think it was still was soon, much, much too soon.

She was shaking now, and the look she gave him seemed to plead for support, and quickly return to her stomach. Steeling himself, he crossed the room and gathered her in his arms. She leaned completely into his embrace, and he could almost feel the tremor of relief and uncertainty coursing through her skin. Her eyes didn’t leave the hands placed on her lower abdomen, where their child was showing more and more with each passing day, and pressed a soft kiss to her temple in a soothing gesture.

“It’s alright, darling. I– …” He stammered then, a myriad of emotions taking hold of his heart as she raised her gaze to meet his eyes. What could he say? That he couldn’t suppress the memory of Oriana, even less so now with her pregnancy? That these months spent with his late wife, waiting for baby Oren to be born, had been the happiest in his life? That the times that came after, when his son had laughed, played and dreamt, had been even better?

He meant to speak, but his voice caught in his throat. Eyes shining with unshed tears, he only managed to smile at her.

As if knowing of his inner turmoil, her eyes softened, and her hand reached up to cup his face. He leaned into the caress, confused by the strength of the conflicting emotions that shook him. Joy, anticipation and happiness seemed equally met with sorrow, remorse and guilt. It was as if his soul was being torn apart between past memories and future promises, and the feeling was bittersweet to the core.

He was abruptly brought back to himself when he heard Anora gasp.

“It kicked again! Oh, Fergus, I don’t… This is the strangest feeling.”

She was trembling ever so slightly, and he tightened his arms around her, her back gently pressed to his chest. He let his fingers entangled in hers, and placed both hands on her belly. As soon as he touched her, he felt the slight movement in her womb, barely noticeable, as if fighting for recognition. Maker, the feeling was unbelievable. He still remembered vividly the first time he felt his son move, but to feel it again now, he realized the awe hadn’t dampened one bit. Dazed, he wondered if one could ever get used to this.

Anora had rested her head on his shoulder, melting in his grasp. A small sigh of contentment escaped her lips, and Fergus felt his heart miss a beat. Tightening his hold on his wife he whispered softly, “It’ll be alright.”

We’ll be alright.
